On Saturday, April 20 in front of a crowd of 610 fans at Adie Knox Arena, Border City Brawlers officially opened the 2013 house league season with the first intraleague bout of the year. 2012 season champions the 519ers were looking to hold onto their winning streak, while the Hiram Stalkers aimed to dethrone their league foes.
The 519ers came out strong and took an early lead, racking up more than 30 points before the Hiram Stalkers made it onto the scoreboard.
The Hiram Stalkers fought back, clawing away at the 519ers substantial lead point by point, finishing the first half with a 25-point jam by fan favourite Drop Dead Alice that left them a mere six points behind.
Two back to back power jams to start off the second half brought the Hiram Stalkers into the lead, but their glory was short-lived as the 519ers rallied to regain the lead and secured the first house league victory of the season with a final score of 143 to 113. Both teams left everything on the track in a crowd-pleasing blowout that promises an exciting rivalry for the season to come.
MVPs for the bout:
Hiram Stalkers Jammer: Drop Dead Alice #99
Hiram Stalkers Blocker: Pain Eyre #1847
519ers Jammer: Mod Broad #5:15
519ers Blocker: Ginny Wheelsly #9 3/4

On Saturday April 6 a very excited crowd exceeding 620 spectators was lucky enough to witness the Border City Brawlers’ All-Stars take on the Timber Rollers of Forest City Derby Girls (London, Ontario). With approximately 100 leagues in Canada BCB’s All-Stars is ranked 24th while the more experienced London team is ranked 16th. In front of their home crowd the Brawlers succumbed to the well seasoned London team 216-103. The Brawlers fought hard and left it all on the track. This family friendly event was a great way to kick off the season.
BCB friend and fan D. Kuentzel was kind enough to provide us with a video compilation of some jams from the bout. Check it out below!
You can also see a few photos of the game at the Windsor Star website.

Check out this article in the latest issue of Five on Five magazine: Deaf Derby. It’s written by Border City Brawlers skater Pain Eyre (Hiram Stalkers and BCB Travel Team 2012-13) and is a great portrait of our league’s journey learning to communicate in American Sign Language on and off the track. What began as an effort to communicate with our Deaf teammate Stormy Pink (Hiram Stalkers and BCB Travel Team 2013) is slowly becoming a way for all of us to have better visual awareness in a sport where the noise on the track can at times be overwhelming.
